Dog Gear Safety

Fit every harness and collar so two fingers slide under the straps, and check the fit again after a few weeks, because straps loosen and dogs change shape. A harness that is too loose can let a dog back out of it near traffic.

Retractable and long leashes can cause rope burns, cuts and falls, and a dog at the end of a long line can reach a road before you can react. Use a fixed-length leash near traffic, and never wrap a leash around your hand or fingers.

A back seat hammock keeps a car clean but it is not a crash restraint. Secure your dog with a properly fitted crash-tested harness or crate, keep dogs out of the front seat where airbags deploy, and never leave a dog in a parked car, even briefly, because the inside of a car heats up fast.

Inspect beds, bowls and chew-prone gear for torn foam, loose stitching and broken plastic, and throw away anything a dog could swallow. Slow feeders are not a substitute for veterinary advice on bloat, weight or digestion. If your dog shows pain, limping, vomiting or trouble breathing, call your veterinarian.
